Robbie, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, now lives in Durham, NC while attending college at Duke University where he is a freshman. He serves as a Senator with Duke Student Government and is also a staff writer for the Duke Chronicle. He also previously served as the Baltimore County Public Schools Student Representative on the Board of Directors of the Baltimore County Parks and Recreation Council. He continues to supervise volunteer staff that remain in Baltimore to further the efforts of All Kids Should Play-Baltimore.
It all started when I heard that a school close to my home in Baltimore had closets full of roller skates in many shapes, colors and sizes. They had been sitting in the closets, dusty and unused for years, and were destined for the dumpster. Not wanting to see them discarded, I decided to find a better use for them. I made many phone calls over the course of the following week before identifying a recreation center located in a community in Baltimore City that had unlimited needs for sports equipment for their after school and summer children's sports programs. We delivered the first truckload of roller skates with the assistance of the very appreciative recreation center director. When we delivered the remaining roller skates, children of all ages ran to greet me and to assist.
One very young boy, wearing a worn and torn shirt and a big smile, ran toward me and very politely asked if I had any roller skates in the truck in his obviously small shoe size. Sure enough, at the bottom of the huge pile of roller skates were a pair just his size. That was the moment I knew that I had to continue what the generosity of others had started. Please allow me to continue to "Play It Forward" with your generosity, too.
Thanks for your continued support to make it all possible!
